Winter Car Care Hacks – Stay Safe and Keep Your Vehicle Protected

Winter driving can be tough, but a few smart steps will keep your car running smoothly and help you avoid getting “stuck” – whether that means losing traction or dealing with costly repairs.

  1. Switch to Winter Tires
In British Columbia, winter tires are required on most highways from October 1 to April 30, and some routes until March 31, to ensure safe travel in snowy and icy conditions. Tires must display the 3PMSF (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) or M+S symbol and have at least 3.5 mm tread depth. These tires provide better grip thanks to softer rubber and deeper tread patterns, reducing the risk of accidents and avoiding fines or being turned away at checkpoints.
  1. Protect Against Salt & Rust

Road salt prevents ice but corrodes metal. Wash your car regularly, especially the undercarriage, and apply a protective wax coat to shield paint and exposed parts.

  1. Keep Doors and Locks Moving

Spray silicone lubricant on door seals and locks to prevent freezing. This simple hack saves time and frustration on icy mornings.

  1. Maintain Visibility

Use winter-grade windshield washer fluid and inspect wiper blades. For fog prevention, wipe the inside of your windshield with shaving cream or keep a sock filled with kitty litter on the dashboard to absorb moisture.

  1. Emergency Traction

Carry a bag of kitty litter or sand in your trunk. If you get stuck, sprinkle it under your tires for instant grip.

  1. Battery & Fluids Check

Cold weather drains battery power and thickens fluids. Test your battery, top up antifreeze, and ensure your oil is winter-ready.

  1. Cover Up

Use a windshield cover or full car cover to avoid scraping ice and protect paint from snow and falling debris.

Bonus Tip: Pack an emergency kit with gloves, blankets, snacks, and a portable jump starter. Winter is unpredictable – be prepared.
